AAACE-NLA Colleagues,

Paul Jurmo, with the New York City Grass Roots Literacy Coalition, has
asked me to post the message below to the AAACE-NLA list for adult
learners and practitioners in the Metro NYC area. This two day event,
a day of training and dialogue followed by a rally, may also be of
interest to literacy coalitions in other parts of the country as an
example of urban literacy advocacy efforts.

Hello, Friends,

Attached (and below) is a flyer about an important adult literacy event
to be held at NYU on Feb. 7th.

If you would like to attend, please send the registration form in ASAP.
  Space is limited.
This will be a great opportunity for anyone interested in the social
change
perspective on adult literacy education and in the issue of adult
learner
leadership. (About 50% of the participants will be participants in NYC
adult literacy programs.)

This February 7th event will be followed -- on February 8th -- by a
rally at
City Hall in support of adult education. (See the attachment.)

All the best,

Paul Jurmo

On February 7th, 2004 the Grassroots Literacy Coalition will hold a

Rally to Fight for Adult Education in NYC

Adult Education classes have been cut and teachers, paraprofessionals
and others have lost their jobs. Thousands of students have been
denied classes in GED, Basic Education, ESL and Literacy. This is an
attack on immigrants, African-Americans, Latinos and others who are
seeking education to improve their lives.

We demand an immediate end to the closing of classes, the re-opening of
closed classes and the returning of removed teachers, paraprofessionals
and other staff.

There is a growing need for Adult Education, ESL, Literacy and GED
classes in New York City. It is safely estimated that over 1 million
New Yorkers could benefit from free classes to improve their lives.
The Department of Education closed 147 classes in September and
threatens many more cuts. Other valuable literacy programs have been
cut or defunded.

We demand a broad expansion of free Adult Education programs in New
York City. Adult Students are the parents of the children in our
public schools and they are a vital part of this city and its future.
Education is essential to an informed and involved citizenry.
