[AAACE-NLA] Save NIFL Campaign

The other day I received a mailing from my congressman Mike Capuano (D-MA)
inviting his constituents to "Join Him at a Community Meeting" at several
places in our district over this weekend and the weekend of the 31st.
Although I've already sent him a fax requesting his support for WIA and
NIFL, I plan to attend one of his community meetings in my neighborhood
(Jamaica Plain) and bring the SAVE NIFL message to his attention. Perhaps
some other folks in my district may want to pay him a call...

One reason I'm working to save NIFL (which I put in my letter) is the
support NIFL has given for numeracy and math literacy instruction and
professional development for math instruction through the EFF initiative
(including the Math Standards Project, ANN Framework for Standards for
Adult Numeracy Instruction) and through LINCS (including the Special
Collection for Science and Numeracy and the Numeracy list discussions on
LINCS). While many of us in the Adult Numeracy Network would prefer to see
a National Institute for Literacy _and Numeracy_ (as the system is called
in Great Britain and Australia), we have greatly appreciated the efforts
made by NIFL to promote numeracy education as part of adult literacy
education. Members of the ANN board of directors are individually sending
letters to their representatives.
