As a result of visiting the Save NIFL Campaign web site, I began
communicating with legislators. In the last few days, I have been in touch by telephone,
mail, fax, and email with my 3 congressmen from Florida. To my surprise, I
have had two telephone conversations and received one return reply already.
Just think of all the programs and services that are built and supported
using the NIFL materials and resources, the LINCS national electronic information
and communication system for adult literacy, the moderated discussion lists,
and the professional development focus on learning disabilities from Bridges
to Practice.
Our critical issue of saving the adult focus of NIFL is one for which we must
advocate. It takes little time, but collectively it will empower us as a
field. Yet, where are the voices of our adult learners? By unleashing their
power and heart-warming stories, our point could be made even more beautifully.
If you each take a moment and visit the "Save NIFL" site at
savenifl at yahoo.com, you will be able to have your voice - and that of your adult learners'
voices - be heard.
An example of my simple letter follows:
Dear.........
As my home state's senator (or representative), you are in a position to
impact millions of lives. Knowing the importance of a literate citizenry, you know
how critical an adult multi-literacy focus is for your constituents in our
state of Florida. Through the process of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA)
reauthorization, the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) is in jeopardy of
losing its focus on adult and family literacy. This would be devastating for
Florida, and of course for the entire country. Please help preserve this
irreplaceable national resource.
If you would share my views with both Mike Enzi, Chair of the Senate
Subcommittee on Employment, Safety and Training and Howard P."Buck" McKeon, Chair of
the House Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness, this important message
will reach others that can also make a difference. My understanding is that
the Senate version of the bill is much preferable to the House version as it
will
provide the vital resources necessary to sustain the adult literacy field.
Any help that they can provide to support the Senate version will be
tremendously appreciated and will positively impact people throughout the country.
I am copying members of the NIFL Board and the Interagency Management Group
that share the distinction of making decisions that affect the future of this
outstanding service provider.
As a lifelong practitioner in the literacy field, I plead with you to help
make a difference in the lives of millions of adults. Please help to save NIFL
and its adult-literacy focus!!
With appreciation,
