George, and others,

I think I can answer some of your questions.

I believe that Jon Randall is planning to do a side-by side comparing
the House and Senate versions of the WIA Title II reauthorization.

The main issue of this campaign -- as described in the postings here
and on the SAVE NIFL! Campaign Web page at http://savenifl.org/ -- is
whether or not NIFL's focus on adult and family literacy will continue.
If we get a groundswell of calls, letters and faxes to Congress to
support the Senate version of the WIA Title II reauthorization, and to
preserve NIFL's focus on adult and family literacy, we have a good
chance. If not, it is likely that NIFL's original, and still valid,
mission will be radically re-focused -- primarily or exclusively on
children's reading. If that happens, we can say goodbye to LINCS and
the NIFL discussion forums ('listservs"), support to states for
implementing Equipped For the Future standards, the Bridges to Practice
initiative to address learning disabilities, and other adult and
family-oriented initiatives. Our already marginalized field will have
been dealt a national blow.

The key, George, is not what national adult education organizations may
be doing to support this in D.C. I hope we will hear directly from them
here soon. It is what is (or is not) happening in the field. I am
glad that you will be contacting your Senators (and your
Congressperson, too, please.) Probabilities? If we get a groundswell,
we can make a difference.

Will *all* those who read this, contact their Congressional
representatives (including Senators) and ask them to support the WIA
Title II Senate version?

In the next two weeks I hope to see the names of at least a hundred
AAACE-NLA subscribers who agree that it is important to preserve
Congress' original intent for the NIFL in the _SAVE NIFL! Campaign
Advocacy Hall of Fame. _ That would be a good beginning.

I agree, George, and believe you will see this focus here.
