Action: Save NIFL!
December 19, 2003

AAACE-NLA Colleagues:
As you may know, NIFL is in danger of losing its adult multi-literacy
focus through the process of WIA reauthorization. Additionally, the NIFL
discussion lists, LINCS, Equipped for the Future (EFF) and other adult
literacy-focused initiatives supported by NIFL are at serious risk,
because many members in Congress do *not* know that the Senate version
of WIA is "better" for the adult literacy field than the House version.
While our Congresspersons are at home over the holiday break, now marks
a critical time for pursuing advocacy efforts.

Save NIFL! Campaign

The purpose of the campaign is to provide the information and resources
necessary to assist you in helping to preserve an adult literacy-focused
NIFL. We have created a website with information about the campaign.
It is dynamic and will continue to grow and change as circumstances
change, and as more and more of us here in the field contact our
Congresspersons.

This concerted effort has originated from concerned people in the field.
No NIFL staff are involved. This is activism by practitioners and adult
learners in the field who value NIFL's original focus on adults.

We hope you will:

** Visit http://www.altn.org/ and click on the NIFL Info button to
learn:
-	How to contact your Senators and Representative;
-	What are some talking points for preserving an adult
literacy-focused NIFL;
-	Who are the key Congresspersons with whom your Congressperson
should share your views;
-	How to make the greatest impact with your views by copying other
influential leaders whose decisions impact the fate of NIFL;
-	Where to obtain email addresses, FAX and phone numbers of most
NIFL Advisory Board members and other leaders;
-	How to join a list of people who have already contacted their
Congresspersons, so that we can "track" our progress nationwide.

** Read the campaign progress reports posted on the AAACE-NLA.

** Revisit the site to participate in opinion polls, sign petitions, and
more.

Join us in affirming what we value about NIFL - & what we need in order
to help adults build the skills they need to succeed as family members,
career builders, and active citizens in a global community. Please join
us in this action now! We *urge* you to contact your Congresspersons
right away!  http://www.altn.org/
