Cecil, et al,

I was also saddened by the news last night of Sen. Paul Simon's passing. I
not only miss his leadership on issues of adult literacy, I miss how he
reminded me that there are among our elected leaders people of intelligence,
caring, honor, and integrity.

Subject: [AAACE-NLA] Sen. Paul Simon dies--a great advocate of literacy

Senator Paul Simon of Illinois, one of the great advocates of a literate
society--and certainly one on a very short list of my political
heroes--passed away earlier today.

Read the story on the Chicago Tribune's website:

I had the honor of having Senator Simon write a brief foreword to my 1998
book, Literacy for the 21st Century. I met him in person a few years later
when he visited NIU's campus and was able to have him to sign a copy of the
book. I found him to be warm, gracious, and very encouraging of my work. I
hope that others on this list who worked closely with him during his time in
Washington and who knew him much more so than me will offer a few memories.
