Good heavens, I never thought I'd turn up on this thread.

A teacher needs to know their subject cold. For maple syrup I think it's 40/1 ration of maple sap to syrup, to boil it down. A teacher needs the 40 in knowledge in order to choose the 1--to adapt whatever piece of knowledge from their repertoire fits the student's needs.

A teacher also better know about how people learn, how the brain works,in order to match instruction to the student.

After this it's calibration all the way--a constant feeling, probing, so the teacher knows when to push, when to pull back, when to use humor, when to bear down, when to leave the student alone. This comes from experience in the classroom and empathy--great gobs of both.
