The only list I've been receiving is the assessment list and it seldom has
postings. I would like to see more discussion and need to do more than
just lurking myself. I think discussion lists are a good way to share
ideas when we can find time to participate. I appreciate reading other's
thoughts and ideas. As a newcomer to adult education, they help me know
which issues that are controversial and give me a way to hear opposing
sides of various issues. Thanks for the lists!

My experience of the discussion lists has been one of accelerated learning
and resourcefulness
as a teacher/learner. The sense of community is supportive.
I appreciate the many sharings, philosophy included, that have made this
possible.
Sincerely,
Patti Vorfeld

I've been thinking about Jackie's question about what we value from the
nifl
lists. First, of course, is the networking, a professional-sounding way to
say I've virtually met some people I now consider friends even though I
wouldn't recognize them if I ran into them.
But more intriguing, to me, has been the string of messages in which
"value"
became "pro and con" which then became "like or dislike." This, and off
list
discussions with some of these friends, got me thinking about the fact
that
what I like most about the lists and what has prompted the most learning
(which is one of the things I most value) are two different things.
I don't <like> it when people call me rude, arrogant, elitist, or say my
ideas are wrong, offensive, or inappropriate topics for discussion, but
those comments--on and off-list--certainly trigger reflection and learning
on my part. I learn from trying to figure out how much of the
interpretation
is from the reader's "mental model" kicking in and filtering
interpretation,
and how much is my presentation of my ideas, or my ideas themselves. So,
you
don't all need to hear the results, but I think I'm learning. I learn from
trying to better articulate what I think to someone who thinks very
differently (even if I never write it). Those tense, impatient, and
sometimes even angry exchanges focus my attention and generate meaningful
reflection in ways that measured, professional, superficial agreements to
disagree just can't.
What I value most about the lists is precisely what "etiquette" and
guidelines undermine: a real exchange of ideas that we are too passionate
about to always be "nice".
