Tom and others:

I am trying to understand what main threads exist in adult literacy.

1) There is context literacy, where a pre-existing context determines what is taught, as in job programs or army programs. Also under context-based education I would put CASAS and EFF. Here the context is derived from the culture--necessary skills. There are also programs where the learners' interests determine the context.

2) Then there is what I will call the GED/academic track. I think this would also include states that use standards for academic areas.

3) Finally, there is the ProLiteracy model which I know a small amount about. Can someone please enlighten me?

I am trying to understand not the techniques that are used (phonics/whole language, blends) but the content--what is taught, the thrust, if you will. Are there any other identifiable types of programs? Or could everything else be called "eclectic?"

I would really appreciate some thoughts from you and any others on this. I hope this request makes sense, I am writing kind of late in the day.

Thanks.

Andrea
