Kathleen. George,  whoever,

1)  The US is dependent on oil for fuel, also dependent on oil as part of other industries--look around the  house--clothes, bottles, records, computer  casings.... We are an oil economy.

2)  We are also hugely interdependent--think of power blackouts this  summer. Think also of vegetables shipped from California to the east, shellfish shipped from the east to west coasts.   A 'developing' country that is less interdependent is also more self-sufficient during a crisis.  US survivalists have latched on to this fact.

3)  We are also loosing the ability to  support ourselves via  manufactured items--not just computer components but machine parts.  

4)  The above makes us hugely vulnerable to disruption in energy networks--shipping, transportation, supply in general.
