[AAACE-NLA] Advocacy Alert: Help Save AmeriCorps

Dear Colleagues,

My guess is that many of you have been touched in one way or another by an
AmeriCorps program and will want to help and pass this message on to others
who might help.

NAULC now runs Literacy*AmeriCorps, the program that was started by the
National Institute for Literacy.  Since 1994, over 1,070 AmeriCorps members
in this program have given over 1,200,000 hours of service, tutoring more
than 52,000 adult learners and tracking their progress.  They have worked
with over 48,000 children in family literacy programs as well.  They have
recruited and supported over 18,500 volunteers.  These volunteers, in turn,
have give more than 221,500 hours of service to the literacy providers in
their communities.

Please take a moment to help save AmeriCorps:

Send a letter to President Bush appreciating AmeriCorps and stating that you
understand he may request another supplemental appropriations bill. Urge him
to include an additional $200 million for AmeriCorps funding this year and
to lift the 50,000 cap on enrollment. His address is 1600 Pennsylvania

Send a letter to your Senators and Representative via e-mail or fax (contact
information can be found at www.senate.gov or www.house.gov) with the
following information:

If your Senators/Representatives signed on to the letter to President Bush
(the letters and signatories will be posted on www.SERVEnet.org), thank
him/her for their support;

Appreciate AmeriCorps and as them to support:
    Emergency supplemental funding of $200 million this year;
    Lifting the 50,000 enrollment cap;
    Full funding for the 75,000 AmeriCorps members that President Bush
requested for fiscal year 2004;
    Reauthorization of the Corporation for National and Community Service.
