David (Godstead), et al:
My posting was not intended to claim that people cannot or should not volunteer time to community service (I am sure that a lot of us do). It was intended to point the hypocrisy of the request.
We live in a country where less than 5% of the population controls over 95% of the wealth. In the meanwhile, the rest of us, 95% of the population, control less than 5% of the wealth.
The government has requested that we give tax relief to the wealthiest 5% so that the economy can be stimulated. They must obviously need the Tax relief since, for this minority, controlling over 95% of the wealth is not enough.
In order to give them this tax relief, we need to cut services for the poorest of the other 95% of the population, whom do not have access to any of the wealth. However, since services are being cut, in addition to working, some of the 95% of the population that control an insignificant part of the wealth need to donate more volunteer time to help the poorest.
I am not suggesting that we stop volunteering our time and efforts. However, I am suggesting that we point to the hypocrisy of being asked to bail out the richest by taking on more responsibility. I am asking that we recognize the fact that we are not going to help solve the problems of the poorest by decreasing funding for services and increasing our volunteer efforts, even if this appeases some of the guilt.
Not only, we cannot do enough to help the poorest, but also we ought to feel guilty that we are not doing enough. In the meanwhile, the wealthiest request that we do more, while they live in million dollar properties, vacation in million dollar villages, travel in private jets and own the land that I walk on.
