Pam et al:

Freire used to argue that literacy is speaking and reading the word in and about the world. Moreover, he believed in Utopia. He thought that Utopia was not an end, but a dynamic process. He said that Utopia was the process of denouncing what it is unjust and oppressive, and announcing what is just and liberating.

Freire believed that the purpose of literacy was for "the oppressed" to work towards building a better world. The goal of literacy instructors is to explore, with the students, issues that were oppressive to the students, in order to engage in a liberatory praxis to construct a better world through literacy.
