Catherine and others:

Please feel at ease to comment on Bush administration policy or other
sensitive topics on this list. AAACE-NLA is sponsored by an agency
which is not part of the government. There are no filters here. And no
one has threatened to close us down. We ask only that you not speak too
scathingly about a particular person. Please comment on policy, not
people. Otherwise, you are free to say what you will.

Colleagues:

In his public report yesterday, William Schultz, the president
of Amnesty International, described the B. administration's "nothing
less than petulant attitude" towards those countries
who did not support recent incursions (aka . . . ). Apparently the
United States has withdrawn, or failed to support par usual, current
peace and human rights efforts by these
specified countries through U.N. sanctioned organizations.
Schultz particularly mentions Africa where tribal conflict has
produced unspeakable horrors and where these countries, regardless of
their support of our incursive efforts, are
involved with efforts we all supposedly and wholeheartedly endorse. Yet
the B. administration apparently plays the
game of payback while people's lives are at stake.

In an e-mail here, KMCook says "This is happening in many
venues." "This" is related and is a kind of activity that we
have already witnessed here on this list, including blackmail where we
either shut up or the list will close.

If not arrogant and an arbitrary swinging around of power, coupled with
other predictable bully tactics and a complete break with long-standing
principles both here and abroad, it certainly looks, feels, tastes and
sounds like it. And on
the international stage, I am afraid that "This" is "us."
