I am not sure who Bob Sweet is or what the National Right to Read
Foundation has to do with adult literacy education. I see he works for
Congress. Is there some connection between his group and the National
Institute for Literacy? Is he the one from the Hill I've heard has been
pressing for "censorship" on the NIFL listservs?
I'm not sure he would agree to discuss his views in this more open
forum.
Here is what I found on the National Right to Read website:
Robert Sweet co-founded The National Right to Read Foundation in 1993.
He is a former senior official at the U.S. Department of Education,
White House domestic policy advisor to President Reagan, head of the
Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention under President
Bush, and former high-school teacher. In July 1997, he resigned as
President of the foundation to accept a position working with the United
States Congress. He is now a professional staff member on the U.S. House
Committee on Education and the Workforce under the leadership of
Chairman John Boehner. His essays, The Century_of_Miseducation of
American Teachers and Illiteracy: An Incurable Disease or Education
Malpractice?, will inspire you to push for the restoration of
scientifically-based reading instruction.

The essays are linked from the website so you can read them.
