I want to thank Tom for the excellent presentations he made in
Massachusetts. He knocked the socks off almost half of our state
legislature in the morning and the Lt. Governor and quite a host of cabinet
secretaries and commissioners in the afternoon. The events, organized by
the Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium, were to announce a new
collaborative pilot project in 5 cities across our state that will develop
and field test new approaches to service delivery that better coordinate and
integrate literacy, health & human services, and employment & training; 14
state agencies and 5 statewide organizations are signed on to this
initiative.
Tom demonstrated once again why he is such an important resource to our
field and to the millions of under-educated and limited English proficient
adults who need and deserve our services -- and a better deal overall! And
besides all that, he's generous with his time and has a great sense of
humor!!!
thanks again Tom,
bob bickerton, MA director of adult education

Progress on Spring Advocacy Speaking Tour April 29, 2003
Tom Sticht
Recalling that this list is focussed on advocacy, I thought I would report
on the progress of the advocacy speaking tour that I announced earlier
this year on the National Literacy Advocate's (NLA) list to celebrate and
advance the cause of adult literacy education. Earlier I announced that I
was offering to speak without fee at adult literacy education conferences
or other meetings.
As of now, I have completed the following presentations for this Spring:
March 16: Long Beach, CA - National Conference on Family Literacy where
around 125 adult educators attended my session on teaching adult reading
and the intergenerational transfer of literacy.
March 26: Boston, Ma - Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium Meetings
attended by around 75-100 adult educators and legislators at the
Massachusetts State House in Boston where my presentations focussed on the
return on investments (ROI) ( "double duty dollars" ) in adult literacy
education.
April 3: Denver, CO - Adult Education & Family Literacy and Center for
At-Risk Education Spring Rendezvous Conference 2003 where some 200 adult
educators and some state legislators heard my presentation on The Power of
Adult Education: Lessons Learned .
My Spring advocacy speaking tour concludes with presentations on The Power
of Adult Education: Lessons Learned as follows:
May 16am: West Palm Beach, FL - Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition
May 16pm: Fort Lauderdale, FL - Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition
If anyone would like additional information about this Spring series of
advocacy presentations you can contact me off the AAACE-NLA list.
